About this project
Pymunk is an easy-to-use Pythonic 2D rigid body physics library built on top of Chipmunk2D (via its fork Munk2D). It enables developers to add realistic physics to games, demos, and simulations with minimal code. Key features include a simple API for creating bodies, shapes, and joints; automatic handling of collision detection and response; support for static and dynamic objects; and integration with popular Python libraries such as Pygame, Pyglet, and Matplotlib. Installation is straightforward via pip or conda, with binary wheels providing pre‑compiled Chipmunk2D for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The library is actively maintained, supports Python 3.9+ and PyPy3, and includes numerous demos and extensive documentation. Its design goals are ease of use, Pythonic feel, simple installation, multi‑platform compatibility, and non‑intrusiveness, allowing it to be combined with other frameworks without imposing a specific game loop.
