About this project

Brogue: Community Edition (CE) is a community-led continuation of Brogue, the minimalist roguelike created by Brian Walker. It is a single-player strategy game set in a randomly generated dungeon, where the goal is to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor from the 26th level. The dungeon contains dangerous creatures, traps and terrain, alongside weapons, potions and artifacts that players must use to survive. The project's stated goals are to fix bugs and crashes, add useful quality-of-life and non-gameplay features, improve and keep gameplay exciting, ease development and maintenance, and provide a convenient base for forks and ports to new platforms. It is maintained under a benevolent-dictator model by tmewett, with discussion in the GitHub issue tracker and a development Discord, and changes are play-tested. Releases are available for Windows, macOS and Linux. On Windows, users run brogue.exe; on macOS, an included app (which may require right-clicking and choosing Open because it is unsigned); on Linux, a ./brogue script, requiring SDL2 and SDL2_image packages. A script can generate a .desktop file. Graphical tiles are included and can be toggled with the G key. Command-line options are available via brogue --help, and on Windows brogue-cmd.bat shows output in the command prompt. Building from source is documented in BUILD.md. The README links to downloads, a wiki, a Reddit forum, a Roguelikes Discord with a #brogue channel, IRC ##brogue on Libera Chat, the original website, and an Android port. A contribution guide and a wiki page describing changes from the original Brogue are also referenced.
