About this project

GeoLibre is a free and open-source, lightweight, cloud-native GIS platform for visualizing, exploring and analyzing geospatial data. It is designed to run in the web browser, as a native desktop app, on Android and iOS, and inside Jupyter notebooks, while keeping data local and private. Built with Tauri v2, React, TypeScript, MapLibre GL JS, DuckDB-WASM Spatial and deck.gl, the same workspace adapts responsively to mobile and small screens. A single project can be viewed through four rendering engines: MapLibre GL JS (default), Mapbox GL JS, CesiumJS, or the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript. Users can switch the primary map from the View menu or mix engines in synchronized split panes without duplicating the project or its layers. A major feature is the geoprocessing toolbox: 1,000+ tools that run entirely in the browser via WebAssembly, with no server or Python sidecar required. Categories include Vector (313 tools), Raster (256), Remote sensing (154), Hydrology (100), Terrain (99), LiDAR (65), Conversion (49), Network (26) and Projection (4). Tools are deep-linkable with a ?tool= URL parameter. The tools come from the Whitebox Next Gen suite plus GeoLibre's own WASM tools. Distribution channels include a web app, desktop installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, Mac App Store, iOS App Store, Google Play, Chrome extension, AUR, Flatpak, and Python and R packages. The Python package allows embedding and controlling the app in Jupyter notebooks; the R package supports RStudio, Quarto, R Markdown and Shiny. Other capabilities include 3D Tiles, 3D city data with time slider animation, planetary basemaps for the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Galilean moons, Titan, Pluto and Charon with per-project ellipsoids, a SQL Workspace, plugins, data integrations, sharing and embedding. Documentation, tutorials and video walkthroughs are published on the project website. The project is MIT licensed and archived on Zenodo with a DOI.
