About this project

Cataclysm: Bright Nights (BN) is an open-source roguelike set in a post-apocalyptic, procedurally generated world with sci-fi elements. It is a fork and variant of Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (DDA), maintained by its own development team, and documents its differences from the original in an online changelog. Gameplay described in the README centers on survival: scavenging food, equipment and vehicles from a dead civilization, fighting or escaping zombies, giant insects, killer robots and other hostile creatures, and competing with other survivors. The stated goal is to find a way to stop the Cataclysm, or become one of its monsters. Distribution and builds: - Stable, latest and experimental executables are published through GitHub Releases, with a Flatpak build available on Flathub. - Source code can be cloned from GitHub or downloaded as a zip archive. - Build guides cover CMake, MSYS2 and vcpkg workflows. - The project states it does not support any third-party launchers, noting none are maintained by team members and most do not track the stable release cadence. Mods and content: - A separate mod registry at mods.cataclysmbn.org helps users discover mods not shipped with the base game. - Third-party mods are placed in a user mods directory; the README lists platform-specific locations for Windows, Android, Linux (XDG) and Flatpak. - Sound is not included by default; users can install soundpacks such as Otopack into a sounds folder and enable them in settings. Documentation and community: - Gameplay and development documentation lives in the docs directory in Markdown, and is also published on the official docs site, which can be built and served locally. - Community channels include GitHub Discussions, a Discord server, and an unofficial DDA modding Discord with a BN channel. FAQ highlights: - An in-game tutorial is available from the Special menu, though the README warns it may not function fully due to code changes; in-game help is accessible with the ? key. - Key bindings can be viewed and changed through the help menu. - New worlds are created from the World menu. - Bug reports can be generated from the in-game debug menu, which opens a GitHub issue with version and configuration prefilled. - Suggestions are directed to GitHub Discussions for simple ideas or the feature request issue form. Licensing: the project states it is developed under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license, with code and content free to use, modify and redistribute; some bundled code carries separate licenses and notices.
