Trio is an open-source automated insulin delivery (OS-AID) system for iOS. It is based on the OpenAPS algorithm, with adaptations specific to Trio, and is developed as an independent project with backing from the Nightscout Foundation. Background and lineage Trio builds on years of work from the #WeAreNotWaiting diabetes community. Its roots trace back to Ivan Valkou's FreeAPS X, an iPhone implementation of the OpenAPS algorithm, as well as later community development known as iAPS, the LoopKit tools for building AID systems on iOS, and a broad set of open-source pump and CGM drivers from the wider OS-AID contributor community. The project collaborates across the iOS and Android open-source AID ecosystem and with researchers and healthcare professionals. Mission and audience The stated mission is to make open-source automated insulin delivery safer and more accessible for people with diabetes who are willing to learn, including those supported by experienced users and healthcare professionals, while continuing to support experienced users and contributors. Current target users include experienced people with diabetes who want a highly configurable system, those with good control seeking less day-to-day intervention, people coming from commercial systems, and those learning Trio with support. Installation and building The README describes two main paths. A build script can be run in Terminal to guide users through downloading and installing Trio. Alternatively, users can clone the repository with git, including submodules, and select the desired branch. A ConfigOverride.xcconfig file containing an Apple Developer ID is created to automate signing of build targets in Xcode, after which the app is built in Xcode.
