About this project
Shotcut is a free, open source, cross-platform video editor licensed under GPLv3. It is built on the MLT multimedia authoring framework and uses Qt 6 for its application and UI layer. The project provides regularly built binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with continuous integration workflows for all three platforms.
Key direct dependencies include MLT, Qt 6 (6.4 minimum), FFTW, FFmpeg (for multimedia format and codec support), Frei0r (for video plugins), and SDL (for cross-platform audio playback). A more complete list of indirect and bundled dependencies is available on the project credits page.
Building from source is intended for beta testers or contributors. The recommended approach uses Qt Creator, or the command line with CMake (optionally with the Ninja generator). The build process involves configuring with a separate build directory, building, and installing so that Shotcut can locate its runtime QML files.
The project supports community translation through Transifex. The main author is Dan Dennedy, with contributions from Brian Matherly. Feature lists and roadmap details are available on the Shotcut website.
