About this project
Sandspiel is an interactive falling-sand game that simulates the behavior of powders, fluids, and other elements in a cellular automata environment. It is implemented in Rust (compiled to WebAssembly), WebGL for rendering, and JavaScript for glue logic. Players can draw elements, watch them interact (e.g., falling, flowing, reacting), and explore emergent phenomena. The project emphasizes creativity and community: it supports sharing and forking of user-created scenes, with a long-term goal of allowing users to define and upload custom elements via a programmable cellular automata API. The codebase includes fluid simulation adapted from the WebGL-Fluid-Simulation project. Build instructions are provided for local development using wasm-pack, npm, and cargo watch. It is a successor to earlier JavaScript and Lua versions of the same concept.
