About this project
Threadbare is a story-driven, collaborative game project in which players do more than explore a world: they help co-create it. The premise is that the world is unraveling at the seams, and players rebuild it by recovering knowledge, crafting stories, and designing characters, quests, and cultures drawn from their own lives.
The project is currently in pre-alpha and is being used in select learning programs as a scaffolded learning experience. In that setting, learners create non-canon StoryQuests that exist alongside the canon narrative. The stated future direction is to let contributors add canon LoreQuests to the core narrative.
A current pre-alpha release can be played in the browser, and development versions are also published. New pre-alpha releases are described as arriving every two to three weeks. A Flathub listing is available for desktop installation.
Threadbare is open source, and the README invites learners, educators, and game developers to follow development and get involved. The core team sets overall game design and direction so the project serves both players and learners, while community members can contribute through playtest feedback, questions and answers in discussions, good first issues, and a Discord server. Code, comments, and development discussion are in English, and the team notes that English is not the first language for about half of the core team, so non-native speakers are welcome. Game translations are hoped for in the medium term.
On the technical side, the repository uses Git Large File Storage (LFS) for large assets such as music and artwork, and contributors are instructed to install and configure Git LFS before cloning. Licensing is split: original source code is under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, while original assets are under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International. Third-party assets and addons carry their own licenses, and the REUSE specification is used so every file is labeled in a machine-readable way via in-file comments, supplementary .license files, and REUSE.toml.
