Anubis, a Web AI Firewall Utility, acts as a gatekeeper for upstream web resources, subjecting incoming HTTP connections to challenges to determine their legitimacy. This approach aims to mitigate the impact of automated requests from AI companies and scrapers, particularly benefiting smaller sites and communities that lack the resources to handle such traffic. The project prioritizes leanness, ensuring it is cost-effective for operators with limited resources, and serves as an alternative for those who cannot use Cloudflare. While it is effective against malicious bots, it may inadvertently block smaller scrapers and beneficial agents like the Internet Archive. To address this, Anubis includes configurable bot policy definitions and is working on a curated list of known-good bots to balance discoverability with uptime. The project is actively maintained with a documentation site, issue tracker, and chat channel, and is distributed via multiple package repositories.
