About this project
MilkDrop 3 is a portable Windows application for real-time music visualization. It is based on BeatDrop by Maxim Volskiy and is described as 100% compatible with presets created for MilkDrop and projectM. It supports any audio source, such as Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud or Winamp, and includes the functionality of MilkDrop2 plus additional features.
Key capabilities described in the README:
- Double-presets (.milk2): mix two presets and display them simultaneously. Press F9 to enter double-preset mode, then spacebar to create a mix; save with 's'. Blending patterns can be changed with 'p', progress forced with 'P', random values reloaded with 'o', presets flipped with 'u', and blending direction forced with 'U'.
- Beat-detection preset switching (F8) with several hardcut modes based on bass/treble thresholds and minimum delays; hardcut7 injects an effect instead of loading a new preset.
- Many transition effects beyond the original zoom, side, plasma and cercle, including plasma2/3, snail variants, triangle, donuts, corner, patches, checkerboard, bubbles, stars, cisor, wave, curtain, vertical/horizontal, linesvertical/lineshorizontal, and later square, stars2, clock, nuclear, arrow, cross, cross2.
- Expanded shader variables: q1-q64 (previously q1-q32), WAVE_SIZE, ZOOM_AMOUNT, ZOOM_EXPONENT, WARP_AMOUNT, WARP_SCALE and WARP_SPEED now accept 0-100 values; max shape sides increased to 500 points.
- Up to 16 shapes and 16 waves displayed simultaneously (previously 4), with .shape and .wave file extensions; 8 new simple waveforms for a total of 16.
- Sprites: multiple layers, blending modes, opacity, size, position, movement, speed, drag-and-drop, mouse control, and saving images directly in .milk/.milk2 files.
- Playlist support with subdirectories, relative and absolute paths, startup playlist selection, and a temporary playlist file.
- MilkPanel: a GUI for editing presets, colors, effects, waveforms, shader code (with undo/redo, recompile, autocomplete, code folding), transitions, options and help.
- Player control: CTRL+right/left loads next/previous track on any player; CTRL+up/down sends fast-forward/rewind to Winamp.
- Display options: always-on-top (F7), borderless mode, multiple monitor stretching (ALT+SHIFT), real-time FPS toggling (F2), auto-transition interval toggling (F3), screen selection, DPI scaling adjustments, and font size adjustment.
- Audio: support for choosing the audio device including microphones, high-resolution audio devices (24-bit/192kHz and beyond), 96Hz audio compatibility, audio sensitivity, FFT attack and decay, and full FFT data accessible in shaders via get_fft(pos) and get_fft_hz(freq).
- Search: improved preset search allowing multi-character queries.
- Other features: randomize colors with 'c', go back to previous generated preset with 'A' or 'Z', deep-mash-up across all five bins, delete mode, drag-and-drop for files and folders, GIF/JPG/PNG/BMP texture support, automatic graphics card selection, shader cache, and a custom VM for stability.
The README also includes a detailed version history from 3.2 through 3.36, noting changes such as 64-bit builds, digital signing, portable Windows operation without DirectX files, and fixes for crashes related to special characters in track titles. The project is distributed via GitHub and supported through Patreon and Buy Me a Coffee.
