About this project
Learn Ukrainian is a free, open-source web-based Ukrainian language course covering levels A1 through C2. It is built on the Ukrainian State Standard 2024 and aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The curriculum contains 1,778 modules spread across 22 tracks.
The six core levels progress from beginner to mastery:
- A1 (55 modules): Cyrillic alphabet, basic grammar, practical scenarios
- A2 (69 modules): All 7 grammatical cases, verbal aspect introduction
- B1 (94 modules): Aspect mastery, motion verbs, communication skills
- B2 (93 modules): Passive voice, registers, professional basics
- C1 (132 modules): Stylistics, literature, complex grammar
- C2 (110 modules): Native-level proficiency
Sixteen specialization tracks cover Ukrainian history, biographies, literature, professional Ukrainian, folk culture, Old East Slavic, and Ruthenian (Middle Ukrainian). Literature has sub-tracks including polemics and philosophy, resistance literature, sci-fi and fantasy, children's literature, drama, humor, and historical fiction.
The course uses a theory-first approach, emphasizing deep grammar understanding over rote phrase memorization. Interactive exercises include quizzes, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and error correction. Content incorporates cultural context and a decolonization perspective with authentic Ukrainian sources.
The site is built with Astro Starlight and runs on Node.js 20+ and Python 3.12.8. Each module passes automated audits for word count, vocabulary coverage, activity balance, and naturalness. The project uses an AI-assisted build pipeline with adversarial quality gates.
