About this project
netfox is a collection of Godot 4 engine addons designed for building responsive online multiplayer games. It provides synchronization, rollback netcode, and convenience features to simplify multiplayer development.
The package consists of several addons:
- **netfox**: The core package implementing timing, rollback, and other multiplayer features. Start here.
- **netfox.noray**: Implements noray integration to establish connections between players, useful for online games.
- **netfox.extras**: High-level, game-specific convenience features built on top of netfox, such as base classes for input management or weapons.
- **netfox.internals**: Shared utilities included as a dependency automatically.
Key features include consistent timing across multiple machines, client-server architecture support, smooth motion with easy interpolation, and lag compensation through client-side prediction and server-side reconciliation. The noray integration provides reliable connectivity.
C# experimental support is available via the separate Netfox Sharp project.
Installation options include downloading releases from GitHub, using Godot's AssetLib, or cloning from source. After adding netfox to a project, addons must be enabled in project settings.
The repository includes numerous examples covering input gathering, state machines, multiplayer FPS, rollback debugging, input prediction, visibility filtering, and more. An example party game called Forest Brawl demonstrates real-world usage. Edgegap offers game hosting and matchmaking integration for netfox projects.
Several games have been built with netfox and released on Steam, including Bubble Battle, PL4no-B, Chrome Carnage, Nitro Turtles, and Kick and Hide.
netfox is licensed under the MIT license.
