Ozmoo is a Z-machine interpreter for the Commodore 64 and similar computers, written by Johan Berntsson and Fredrik Ramsberg. It is intended as a redistributable interpreter for Infocom and Inform interactive fiction, avoiding the unclear licensing of the original Infocom interpreters. The README states support for Z-code versions 1-8. Version 6 support varies by target: all targets support the eight-window screen model, but only MEGA65 and Commander X16 support graphics and mouse controls. Release 16 added Z6 game support, with graphics on MEGA65 and Commander X16 and without graphics on C64, C128, and Plus/4.
Documented limitations include roughly 35 KB of dynamic memory on C64, C128, and Plus/4, with no such limitation on MEGA65. On a system with a single 1541 drive, non-dynamic game data can be up to 170 KB, typically allowing game files around 190 KB. Most Inform 6 games and all Inform 7 games are described as too slow on C64, C128, and Plus/4; Inform 7 games may also crash because they expect a much larger stack. PunyInform, ZIL, Infocom, Inform 5, and early Inform 6 games are cited as performing well. MEGA65 can run most Inform 6 games and can use a large stack option to support Inform 7 games.
Features include fitting more text on screen than Infocom interpreters by using all 40 columns, smart wordwrap, and a single-character MORE prompt; custom fonts and alphabets; predefined mappings for Swedish, Danish, German, Italian, Spanish, and French; custom color schemes and a configurable darkmode toggled with F1; undo; scrollback using REU or a smaller RAM buffer; a configurable splash screen; named saved game states with up to ten save slots; no-virtual-memory builds for C64 and Plus/4; d81 disk image builds that allow game saves on the game disk; and REU caching. The README notes Ozmoo displayed 872 characters of text compared with 650 for the Infocom interpreter in a Hollywood Hijinx comparison.
Ozmoo can be used through Ozmoo Online or built locally on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Local builds require Acme, Exomizer, Vice, Ruby, and optionally Python for version 6 games with graphics on MEGA65 or Commander X16. The build command is ruby make.rb game.z5, with -s to start the result in Vice. Separate ports are listed for Acorn computers and Oric-1/Atmos.
