About this project

zk is a command-line note-taking assistant designed for maintaining a plain text Zettelkasten or personal wiki. It supports creating notes from templates, advanced search and filtering using tags, links, and mentions, and integrates with popular editors like Emacs, Neovim, and VS Code via dedicated plugins. The tool includes an interactive browser powered by fzf, Git-style aliases, named filters, and automation-friendly features. Notes are stored in Markdown with support for Wikilinks, hashtags, multi-word tags, and YAML frontmatter. zk does not serve notes on the web or act as a note editor — it focuses on organization and retrieval. Pre-built binaries are available for macOS, Linux, and Windows (with caveats), and it can be installed via Homebrew, Nix, Alpine, Arch, MacPorts, or built from source using Go 1.21+. Community contributions are welcome via issues, PRs, and discussions. Related projects include Neuron, Emanote, Weave, and plugins for spaced repetition and graph visualization.
