ZeroTier creates a global, programmable virtual Ethernet network. Its VL1 layer provides cryptographically addressed, end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer connectivity, while the VL2 layer emulates Ethernet similarly to VXLAN. The VL2 layer includes enterprise-style SDN features such as fine-grained access-control rules for micro-segmentation and security monitoring. Most traffic is sent directly between peers when possible; ZeroTier also offers free relaying for peers that cannot establish direct connections. The project supports networked devices, virtual machines, containers, and applications, and free Android and iOS apps are available through their respective app stores. The repository includes build instructions, platform requirements, service API documentation, and a network controller component. Most code is licensed under the MPL, while portions under nonfree/ are source-available rather than free software, and code under ext/ retains its original external licenses.
