About this project

VLC is a libre and open source media player and multimedia engine, focused on playing everything and running everywhere. It can play most multimedia files, discs, streams, and devices, and is also able to convert, encode, stream, and manipulate streams into numerous formats. The engine of VLC, called libVLC, can be embedded into 3rd party applications. libVLC is released under the LGPLv2 (or later) license, allowing embedding in applications licensed under other terms. It has bindings for languages such as C++, Python, and C#. VLC itself is released under the GPLv2 (or later) license. VLC is available for Windows (7 and later, including UWP and Windows 10), macOS (10.10 and later), GNU/Linux, BSD, Android (4.2 and later, including Android TV and Android Auto), iOS (9 and later, including AppleTV and iPadOS), Haiku, OS/2, and a few others. The Android and iOS apps are maintained in separate repositories. The project is developed and supported by a community of volunteers as part of the VideoLAN project, which was started at École Centrale Paris. The main development is done in C, with additional code in C++, Objective-C, assembly, and Rust. Related repositories use Kotlin/Java, Swift, and C#. Contributions are handled through Merge Requests on their GitLab repository.
