About this project

Streamdown is a drop-in replacement for react-markdown, specifically engineered to address the challenges of rendering streaming content from AI models. Unlike standard Markdown parsers, it is designed to handle incomplete or unterminated Markdown blocks, ensuring a smooth user experience as AI-generated text arrives in chunks. It features built-in support for GitHub Flavored Markdown (tables, task lists, strikethrough), LaTeX math rendering via KaTeX, Mermaid diagrams, and syntax highlighting powered by Shiki. Built with security in mind using rehype-harden, it also offers performance optimizations through memoized rendering. The library is designed to integrate with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui design tokens, making it highly customizable for modern web applications. It provides flexible configuration options, including a fallback component for handling custom or unsupported HTML tags, and supports modular plugins for extended functionality.
