About this project

Cmdr is an extremely fast, keyboard-driven two-pane file manager for macOS, written in Rust and using Tauri for the backend with Svelte and TypeScript for the frontend. It aims to provide a Total Commander-like experience on macOS, with a modern UI and full keyboard control. Core features include: - Two-pane layout for side-by-side folder viewing. - Keyboard-first navigation and operations (copy, move, rename, delete) using familiar shortcuts. - Optional, privacy-first AI features: natural-language search and selection, with smart renaming and auto-organization (human-approved) coming soon. AI runs locally by default, so no data leaves your Mac. - Real dark and light modes with WCAG 2.2 AA and APCA contrast compliance. Installation is via download from getcmdr.com or Homebrew (requires trusting a third-party tap until the repo reaches 225 stars). The app is source-available under the Business Source License 1.1, free for personal use, with a one-time $59 commercial license per person (includes one year of updates; $39/year thereafter). The source converts to AGPL-3.0 after three years per release. The README also documents an OpenAI Build Week submission where Codex was used to build a natural-language bulk-rename feature, including image-content-based renaming and a review UI. That feature is available in v0.35.0 and can be tested by configuring an AI provider and asking Cmdr to rename files.
