hermex

Hermex is a native SwiftUI iPhone app for controlling a self-hosted hermes-webui server — a mobile cockpit for an AI agent running on hardware you control. The phone acts as the control plane; the agent, its tools, and your data remain on your own machine. The app is free, has no subscriptions or in-app purchases, and includes no analytics or tracking. It communicates only with your server. Optional push notifications are off by default and route through an open-source relay you can self-host, which sees device tokens, notification metadata, and ciphertext but never message text, server URLs, or credentials. Key features include streaming chat with model, reasoning-effort, workspace, and profile options; file and image attachments; the ability to steer or stop a run mid-flight; session browsing, search, and resume with offline-readable cached sessions; model and provider switching with recents and favorites; agent profile and project organization; viewing and editing scheduled cron tasks; browsing and searching installed agent skills; a workspace file browser; and read-only Memory and Insights panels for agent memory and usage analytics. Hermex is a client only — it does not host or provision a backend. Users bring their own hermes-webui server (a third-party MIT-licensed project) running on macOS, Linux, or Windows/WSL2 with Python 3.11+. Setup is described as taking about 15 minutes: run the server and set a password, make it reachable from the phone, then connect with the server URL and password. Reachability options include HTTPS via a tunnel or reverse proxy (recommended), private HTTPS with Tailscale Serve, or simulator-only local testing over http://localhost:8787. Self-hosting, securing, and maintaining reachability are the user's responsibility. Building from source requires Xcode 26 or newer (iOS 18 SDK) and an iPhone or simulator on iOS 18+. The repository includes an Xcode project with the HermesMobile target and scheme, Swift Package Manager dependencies, and command-line build and test examples. Documentation covers the working agreement, development workflow, TestFlight operations, security reporting, and repo-local agent conventions. Contributions are welcome under stated rules: do not invent API endpoints or JSON shapes, decode Codable models tolerantly, add no dependencies beyond the locked list without approval, and do not modify the upstream server from this repo. The project is MIT licensed and notes that it is an independent client not affiliated with the upstream hermes-webui project.
