About this project
GitType is a command-line typing game that converts source code from local repositories or GitHub projects into typing practice. Instead of generic sample text, players type real functions from their own codebases.
Key capabilities:
- Multi-language extraction: Rust, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Go, Ruby, Swift, Kotlin, Java, PHP, C#, C, C++, Haskell, Dart, Scala, Clojure, Elixir, Erlang and Zig.
- Real-time metrics: live WPM, accuracy and consistency tracking while typing.
- Ranking system: unlock developer titles ranging from "Hello World Newbie" to "Quantum Computer", each with ASCII art.
- Game modes: Normal, Time Attack, and custom difficulty levels from Easy to Zen, plus pause/resume.
- Repository sources: play from the current directory, a specified path, a cloned GitHub repository, or browse trending GitHub repositories filtered by language.
- Themes: 15+ built-in themes with dark/light modes and custom theme support.
Installation options include a one-line install script, Homebrew, Cargo, Nix, and pre-compiled binaries for macOS, Linux and Windows. The project is written in Rust and released under the MIT license. Documentation covers installation, usage, playing guide, themes, supported languages, contributing and architecture.
