About this project
Magnetic is a Windows-based video editor designed for long-form creator workflows, utilizing a magnetic timeline where clips do not overlap and edits ripple automatically. It is built with Electron, React, and TypeScript, employing WebCodecs and WebGL2 for playback to maintain a low memory footprint even with multi-gigabyte files.
Key capabilities include:
- Editing Tools: A magnetic timeline with a spine and connected clips, JKL transport, keyframe animation for transforms and opacity, and a library model for media organization.
- AI & Audio Features: Local transcription via whisper.cpp enabling edit-by-transcript, automatic silence removal, loudness normalization to -14 LUFS, and auto-ducking of music under dialogue.
- Intelligent Assistance: A Copilot integration (via Claude) and MCP server access that allows AI agents to propose edits, such as cutting specific words or normalizing audio, which users can preview as ghost-diffs before accepting.
- Export & Performance: H.264/AAC MP4 export via bundled FFmpeg, featuring a "smart-render" mode that stream-copies untouched video bitstreams for high-speed exporting of long VODs.
- Media Management: A filmstrip browser with hover-skimming, missing-media relinking, and background thumbnail/waveform generation.
