About this project

Paperback is an open-source, cross-platform ebook and document reader focused on speed, low resource use, and accessibility. It is written in Rust and uses a wxWidgets-based GUI. The application supports a wide range of formats including EPUB, PDF, MOBI/AZW, DOC/DOCX, PPT/PPTX, ODT/ODP, RTF, CHM, DAISY, FB2, CBZ, HTML, Markdown, plain text, M4B audiobooks, and WinHelp files. Key features include a tabbed interface with single-instance behavior, screen reader support with live-region announcements, robust search with regex and persisted history, navigation by headings, pages, links, lists, images, tables, formulas, and separators, plus bookmarks and notes. Users can customize fonts, colors, spacing, alignment, and table rendering. Password-protected documents and per-document settings are supported, with export/import via .paperback files. The project also provides a `pb` command-line tool for converting documents to plain text, HTML, or Markdown. The workspace contains `paperback-core` for parsing logic, the GUI application, the CLI tool, and build automation. Building requires Rust 1.87+, CMake, Ninja, and pandoc. The project is licensed under the MIT license.
