About this project

Timefold Solver is an AI constraint solver for Java and Kotlin, positioned as "planning optimization made easy." It is developed by the original OptaPlanner team, with the stated aim of freeing the world of wasteful planning. Typical problems it targets include the Vehicle Routing Problem, Employee Rostering, Maintenance Scheduling, Task Assignment, School Timetabling, Cloud Optimization, Conference Scheduling and Job Shop Scheduling, among other planning problems. Getting started: the README points to a Getting Started guide in the documentation and a separate Quickstarts repository. The project is distributed as a Maven artifact (ai.timefold.solver:timefold-solver-bom) and requires Java 21+. Building from source requires JDK 21+ and Maven 3.9.11+, installable for example via Sdkman. The documented steps are: clone the repository, then run ./mvnw clean install -Dquickly. Editions: there are two editions. The Community Edition, which is this repository, is open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The Enterprise Edition is a non-open-source commercial offering that requires a Timefold license to run. A license comparison page is linked. Community and project health: the README links GitHub Discussions, a community Discord, commit activity, GitHub Issues, and SonarCloud badges for reliability, security and maintainability ratings. Contributions are welcomed, with a CONTRIBUTING.md file referenced. Legal notice: Timefold Solver was forked on 20 April 2023 from OptaPlanner, which was entirely Apache-2.0 licensed. It is described as a derivative work of OptaPlanner and OptaPy, including copyrights of the original creator Red Hat Inc., affiliates and contributors, all under Apache-2.0.
