About this project
BizHawk is an open-source multi-system emulator project written in C#. Its main frontend, EmuHawk, provides quality-of-life features for casual players as well as advanced recording/playback and debugging tools, making it a primary choice for TASers (Tool-Assisted Speedrunners).
Key features common across all emulated systems include:
- Format, region, and integrity detection for game images
- 10 save slots with hotkeys and infinite named savestates
- Speed control, including frame stepping and rewinding
- Memory view/search/edit in all emulated hardware components
- Input recording (creating TAS movies)
- Screenshotting and recording audio + video to file
- Firmware management
- HUD overlay for input, framerate, and more
- Rebinding hotkeys for frontend controls (keyboard, mouse, gamepad)
- Comprehensive input mapper for emulated gamepads and peripherals
- Programmatic control via Lua or C#.NET
Supported systems include 3DO, Apple II, Arcade (MAME), Atari 2600/7800/Jaguar/Lynx, WonderSwan, Commodore 64/Amiga, ColecoVision, Doom, DOS/Windows, Channel F, Vectrex, Odyssey², Intellivision, MSX, PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, PC-FX, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo (NES, SNES, Game Boy/Color, GBA, N64, DS, 3DS, Virtual Boy), Sega (Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn, SG-1000), ZX Spectrum, PlayStation, TI-83, TIC-80, and Uzebox.
Many cores are bespoke to the project (e.g., NesHawk, GBHawk, PCEHawk, SMSHawk, A7800Hawk, C64Hawk, etc.), while others are ported from projects like Mednafen, MAME, and others. DiscoHawk is a disc image converter included in the project.
Installation is available for Windows (prebuilt binaries) and Unix/Linux (via packages or Nix). Development builds are automatically generated on each contribution. Building from source is supported on Windows (Visual Studio) and Unix (shell script).
For TASing, the project includes TAStudio, a powerful tool for frame-by-frame input editing with analog control support. External tools can be created in C#/.NET to extend functionality.
Support is provided via the TASVideos wiki, Discord, and GitHub issues. The project is Windows-centric but has a Linux port with most features working. macOS support is limited to older versions.
