Sparkle 2 is a secure and reliable software update framework for macOS. It adds support for application sandboxing, custom user interfaces, updating external bundles, and a more modern architecture with faster and more reliable installs. Key features include EdDSA signature verification and Apple Code Signing for security, delta updates that patch only changed files with atomic-safe installs, and the ability to use channels for beta updates with phased rollouts. The framework stays hidden until second launch for better first impressions and supports handling permissions, quarantine, and automatic authentication requests. It uses RSS-based appcasts for release information and can update external bundles. To use Sparkle, no code modification is required — just serve static files via an HTTPS server.
