About this project
Firefly Synth 2 (FF2) is a semi-modular synthesizer and effects plugin for Windows, Linux, and macOS, available in VST3 and CLAP formats. It is a successor to Firefly Synth 1, offering a comprehensive set of synthesis and sound design tools.
Key features include:
- **Oscillators**: Multiple oscillator types, including analog-style, FM, and physical modeling (plucked/bowed strings).
- **Filters**: State-variable filter with multiple modes.
- **Effects**: Built-in compressor, distortion, echo (delay), and reverb.
- **Modulation**: A global modulation matrix, per-voice modulation, LFOs, and MSEG (multi-segment envelope generator).
- **Unison**: Per-oscillator and global unison with adjustable voice count and detune.
- **Microtuning**: Support for MTS-ESP and custom tunings.
- **Themes**: Multiple color themes for the UI.
- **Real-time visualization**: Graphs and knobs that respond to audio (may not work in all hosts).
Platform support: Windows 10+ (x64), macOS 10.15+ (x64/ARM), Linux (x64, glibc 2.35+; ARM64 works but not officially supported).
Host compatibility: Tested with Carla, Bitwig, Ardour, FL Studio, Reaper, and Renoise (with caveats). Renoise has a known issue with parameter automation stability across plugin updates.
Installation: Copy the entire plugin folder to the appropriate VST3/CLAP directory. Remove previous versions completely.
Building from source: Requires recursive git clone, then run build scripts in /scripts (build_windows.bat, build_linux.sh, build_mac.bat) with options for build type, warnings-as-errors, and AddressSanitizer.
Known issues: String oscillator timbre is sample-rate dependent; FL Studio may have MIDI modwheel/pitchbend default mismatches; some Linux hosts have broken context menu options; real-time visualization may not work in some VST3 hosts (CLAP is more reliable).
The repository includes demo tracks (MP3 and project files for Renoise/Reaper) showcasing various features, as well as screenshots of the UI and themes.
