About this project

Metropolis is a geometric sans-serif typeface originally designed by Chris Simpson and maintained in this fork by Steven. The family spans nine weights (Thin through Black), each with a corresponding italic, and is available as both static fonts and variable fonts covering the full 100–900 weight range. Font formats provided include OTF (for macOS and design apps), TTF (hinted static fonts for Windows), variable TTF, and WOFF2 (static and variable web fonts). The roman variable WOFF2 is 55 KB and the italic is 60 KB. OpenType features include tabular figures and math symbols (tnum), a single-storey 'a' alternate (ss01), stylistic alternates (salt, aalt), and default kerning and accent positioning (kern, mark). Latin coverage includes Western European accents, Latvian, and Romanian characters. The project includes a Make-based build system using uv and Python 3.12, with targets for building OTF, TTF, variable TTF, and WOFF2 outputs, plus a check target. Source files are Glyphs format for roman and italic. An interactive specimen is available via GitHub Pages. The fonts are released under the Unlicense (public domain), allowing use, modification, and distribution for any purpose with or without attribution. This fork preserves the upstream r11 outlines while fixing the variable build, font metadata, character coverage, italic naming, embedding, and accent spacing.
