Silex is an open-source, visual website builder designed for creating static sites with dynamic data. It emphasizes freedom and user ownership: output is standard HTML/CSS, so users can export everything and host anywhere without vendor lock-in. The tool is maintained by the non-profit Silex Labs and is free forever under the AGPL license. Key features include a GrapesJS-based visual editor with drag-and-drop page building, HTML/CSS/JS editors, static HTML output, CMS integration (WordPress, Strapi, Squidex, or any GraphQL API), and compatibility with the 11ty static site generator. A desktop app (alpha) built with Tauri allows offline work and includes a built-in MCP server for AI-assisted 'vibe coding' — users can describe a site in natural language and see it built live, using any MCP-compatible AI tool (e.g., Ollama for local models, OpenCode, Goose, Claude Code). Silex targets web agencies, WordPress developers, freelance designers, and no-code developers. It offers self-hosting options via Docker, Node.js, or one-click deploy on CapRover. The project includes a plugin system, SEO tools, and a community-driven roadmap. Contributions are welcome, with good first issues and a contributing guide provided.
