sandboxie

Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for Windows NT-based operating systems. It creates secure operating environments where applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying local or mapped drives or the Windows registry. This allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and safer web surfing. The project offers two editions sharing the same core components: Sandboxie Plus with a modern Qt-based UI and Sandboxie Classic with the older MFC-based UI. Plus includes features such as Snapshot Manager, portable mode, privacy mode sandboxes, security-enhanced sandboxes, per-sandbox network firewall using Windows Filtering Platform, encrypted sandboxes with AES storage, SOCKS5 proxy forcing, DNS control, process memory limits, trigger system, and an add-on manager. Classic lacks native interface support for these newer features, though some can be configured manually in Sandboxie.ini. This is a community fork that began after Sophos released the Sandboxie source code in April 2020. The project is actively maintained with releases, documentation, and community support through Discord and forums. System requirements are Windows 7 or higher (64-bit).
