About this project
Local List Assist is a Home Assistant custom integration that provides a local-first list application for household lists, grocery runs, errands, projects, camping, and travel. It is fully hosted within Home Assistant and does not rely on external cloud sync services.
The integration offers a dedicated sidebar app with a phone-first bottom tab bar for List, Shop, Meals, and Plan views. Shopping Mode presents a focused, large-tap-target screen for in-store use, showing only unchecked items grouped by category order with a progress bar and quick add. Quick Add autocomplete suggests previously added items with resolved categories, while frequent quick-add chips allow one-tap entry of common staples.
Saved Meals let users define ingredients and directions once, then add ingredients through a confirm checklist and cook from numbered steps. The meal planner provides a dated calendar for assigning meals to days and adding a day's or week's ingredients at once, with de-duplication across meals.
Automatic categorization uses an expanded built-in grocery knowledge base to route items to specific sections such as Produce, Bakery, Dairy, and Pantry. A review-and-learn flow allows users to teach correct categories for items that land in Other. The integration supports multiple local lists with color theming, per-list category ordering, drag-and-drop reordering, duplicate decision handling, completed item restore and clear, and JSON backup and restore.
The UI follows the active Home Assistant theme, including light, dark, and custom themes. Changes propagate across open Home Assistant devices through WebSocket push updates with fallback to standard state updates. Service APIs include route_item, add_to_list, install_voice_sentences, apply_review, confirm_duplicate, learn_term, forget_term, and sync_helpers. Installation is available through HACS or manual copying into the custom_components directory.
