About this project
GPUIX allows developers to build native desktop applications using familiar React or Solid syntax while leveraging the high-performance GPUI framework (the engine behind the Zed editor). By bypassing the DOM and Electron, it renders interfaces directly via Metal, DirectX, or Vulkan. The framework uses a mutation-based architecture where JavaScript state changes are batched and applied to a Rust-based retained tree, which GPUI then renders at high frame rates. It supports hot reloading, native binary compilation via Bun, and provides a robust set of tools for event handling, layout, and cross-platform packaging. Key features include support for native text, flexbox layout via Taffy, and a shared automation protocol for testing. It is designed for developers who want the productivity of web-based UI frameworks with the performance and efficiency of native GPU-accelerated applications.
