About this project
pygame-ce (Community Edition) is a free and open-source, cross-platform Python library designed for the development of multimedia applications, particularly 2D video games. Built on top of the Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) library, it abstracts complex low-level functions to make game development intuitive and accessible.
Created as a fork of the original pygame project by its former core developers, pygame-ce focuses on delivering more frequent releases, continuous bug fixes, performance enhancements, and a democratic governance model. It includes modules for handling graphics, sound, input devices, and fonts, and comes with comprehensive documentation and built-in examples to help developers get started quickly. The library is distributed under the GNU LGPL version 2.1, allowing for both open-source and commercial game development.
