About this project
PlayCanvas Engine is a browser-based, open-source 3D game engine built on modern web standards including WebGL2, WebGPU, and WebXR. It enables developers to create interactive 3D applications, games, and visualizations that run across all devices with a compatible browser. The engine supports advanced graphics features such as Gaussian Splatting, 3D physics via ammo.js, state-based animations, and 3D positional audio using the Web Audio API. Asset handling is optimized through asynchronous streaming of glTF 2.0 models with Draco and Basis compression. Developers can write game logic in JavaScript or TypeScript. PlayCanvas offers multiple integration paths: standalone npm package, React renderer, web components, CLI scaffolding tool (create-playcanvas), and a full browser-based visual editor. The ecosystem includes extensive documentation, examples, and community support via Discord, Reddit, and forums. Notable users include Disney, Samsung, Zynga, and BMW. Projects built with PlayCanvas range from casual games to complex visualizations and immersive XR experiences. The engine is actively maintained, with builds available via npm and source code hosted on GitHub.
