About this project

PlayCanvas Editor is the visual editing environment behind playcanvas.com, used to build WebGL, WebGPU and WebXR applications directly in the browser. This repository contains the Editor frontend source, which developers can run locally and load against their own PlayCanvas scenes. Key points from the README: - The Editor is accessed through playcanvas.com and provides a visual scene editing workflow for real-time 3D and XR projects. - An AI-assisted development path is highlighted: the Editor includes a built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration, letting AI assistants inspect and modify projects through an open Editor session. - Local development requires Node.js 18 or later. After cloning and running npm install, npm run dev builds the frontend and serves it locally on port 3487. Appending the use_local_frontend query parameter to a scene URL on playcanvas.com loads the development build instead of production; the parameter also works in the code editor and launch page. - The Editor is built on several open-source libraries: PlayCanvas Engine (3D view and launch page), Observer (data binding and history), PCUI (front-end components) and PCUI-Graph (node-based graph rendering). Integration testing of these libraries is supported via npm link. - The test suite uses Playwright for end-to-end testing and is split into API tests and UI tests. Running it requires Docker and a .env file with host, login and launch host settings plus an authentication cookie from an existing PlayCanvas account. Docker Compose starts and stops the test container, and the image can be built from source with the --build flag. - For writing new tests, Node.js 18+ is required; Playwright dependencies are installed, and npm run codegen supports dynamic test recording. Documentation links include the user manual, API reference, blog and forum. The project is released under a license file in the repository and has community channels on Discord, Reddit and X.
