About this project
GOAT is a free and open-source WebGIS platform designed for integrated planning and fact-based decision-making. It combines modern web mapping with planning intelligence, providing GIS tools, integrated data, and accessibility analyses in an all-in-one solution.
The project is a monorepo with a full-stack architecture. The frontend uses TypeScript, Next.js, React, MapLibre GL JS, MUI, React Flow, Auth.js, and Zod. The backend is built with Python, FastAPI, Pydantic, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL, and Keycloak. Geospatial and analytics capabilities rely on DuckDB, DuckLake, Windmill, GDAL, PMTiles, and STAC.
GOAT can be used as a hosted cloud service or self-hosted. Self-hosting is supported through a Docker Compose bundle for a single Linux server or a Helm chart for Kubernetes. The Compose setup includes the web app, APIs, Keycloak login, object storage, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Windmill, and HTTPS. The Kubernetes deployment includes GOAT services, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Windmill, while users provide S3 storage and Keycloak.
The core platform is licensed under GPLv3, including user management, teams, and organizations. Optional commercial services such as hosting, support, and enterprise capabilities are available. Local development is supported through a root compose.yaml that runs PostgreSQL, MinIO, Redis, and Windmill, with the web app and Python services running on the host machine.
