About this project
CineTray is a macOS menu bar application that brings movies, shows, and music from your media servers and local folders into a convenient menu bar interface. It supports Plex (one or more servers), Jellyfin, Navidrome, TorrServer, and your own folders, with each source contributing its own library sections.
Key features include:
- **Media Sources**: Connect to Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome, TorrServer, or simply add local folders. Each server library appears as a separate section in the menu, named as on the server.
- **Video and Music Panes**: Switch between video and music views. The music pane includes Artists, Albums, and Playlists sections.
- **Players**: Control music from an inline player in the menu or open separate music and video player windows. Video can be played in CineTray's built-in player, IINA, VLC, or any other installed app.
- **Continue Watching**: Merges server-side watch progress (Plex Continue Watching, Jellyfin Resume/Next Up) with what you started in CineTray, with resume support across devices and progress indicators on posters.
- **Search**: Smart search that ignores spacing, punctuation, and accents, showing only sections with matches.
- **Release Calendar**: Connect Radarr and Sonarr to see upcoming movies and episodes in a month view and a list of the coming week.
- **Requests with Seerr**: Connect Seerr to request movies and shows you don't have, with season selection for shows.
- **Downloads and Offline Mode**: Download movies, episodes, and music for offline playback.
- **Scrobbling and Artwork**: Trakt and Last.fm scrobbling, plus artwork for your own music from Deezer, MusicBrainz, Last.fm, TheAudioDB, or Discogs.
- **Security**: Plex tokens are never sent over plain HTTP to remote servers, and all tokens and API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain.
- **Performance**: Parallel source loading, background menu refresh, and direct Jellyfin playback for fast video start.
- **Build without Xcode**: Clone and run `make` to build, sign, and install using only the Command Line Tools.
CineTray is a fork of the abandoned KuDoZ007/QP project and has been developed independently since. It requires macOS 26 or later and Swift 6.3 for the SwiftVLC package. The app is built with Swift and uses the SwiftVLC package for video playback.
For setup, users can connect servers in Settings > Accounts and choose folders in Settings > Data. Optional integrations like Trakt, Last.fm, TMDb, and Discogs require free accounts and API keys, which are stored securely in the Keychain.
Screenshots in the README show the menu interface, video and music players, search results, release calendar, and customization options. The project includes a CHANGELOG.md for the full list of features and updates.
