About this project
OSSU Math (Open Source Society University – Math) is a community-curated curriculum for a free, self-taught education in mathematics using online materials. It is aimed at learners who want a solid grounding in fundamental math concepts and are willing to study largely independently, with support from a worldwide community of fellow learners.
The curriculum is modeled on the degree requirements of an undergraduate mathematics major, excluding general (non-math) education requirements, on the assumption that most participants already have education outside mathematics. Courses are selected to match the 2015 CUPM curricular guidelines, be open for enrollment, run regularly (ideally self-paced), and offer high-quality teaching. When no course meets these criteria, a book is used as a supplement.
Structure:
- Core Mathematics (required): Introduction to Mathematical Thinking, Calculus, Introduction to Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Introduction to Analysis, and Introduction to Abstract Algebra.
- Advanced Topics (electives): Mathematical Logic, Geometry and Topology, Probability and Statistics, Mathematical Analysis, and Abstract Algebra. Learners must satisfy a breadth requirement (one course in each advanced topic) and a depth requirement (three additional courses in one chosen topic), or design a custom subject with community validation.
Each course entry lists duration, weekly effort, and prerequisites, and courses are ordered by prerequisite so learners can progress top to bottom. The README states the curriculum can be completed in roughly two years with about 18–22 hours per week of study. Resources are generally free, though some courses may charge for graded assignments, tests, or projects.
The project provides community channels including a Discord server and GitHub issues, a code of conduct, contribution and help documents, and a Trello board template for tracking progress. It is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International.
