About this project
Compute Squad is a multi-agent coding workflow plugin that runs in both Claude Code and Codex CLI. It orchestrates seven named agents through a six-stage pipeline: Strategy (goal clarification), Archive (log reset), Recon (codebase mapping), Plan (specification and work classification), Execute (implementation), and Accept (adversarial review).
Before each run or resume, the user confirms exact model IDs for three tiers (top, mid, bottom); the same model can fill multiple tiers. Routing is based on decision density rather than task difficulty—planning and acceptance use the top tier, other judgment uses mid or above, and transcription-grade work goes to the bottom tier.
The seven agents are: squad-pm (top tier, handles planning and adversarial acceptance), squad-recon (mid tier, read-only codebase mapping), squad-executor and its mechanical/complex variants (implementation at different tiers), squad-helper (delegated subtasks), and squad-mech (bottom tier, zero-judgment busywork like archival and formatting). Agents that encounter situations requiring judgment beyond their role refuse with a REFUSED marker and escalate.
The system maintains a shared audit log (COMPUTE_SQUAD_LOG.md) that every stage appends to, plus a compute-squad-archive/ directory preserving past runs. Failed runs are never discarded—they serve as evidence. A FAIL result re-runs a single named stage rather than the whole pipeline.
Installation differs by host: Claude Code uses a plugin marketplace command; Codex requires a git clone and an update script that validates the checkout is clean on main, renders a build from git objects, and installs the plugin, agents, and profiles. Codex model choices are stored outside the checkout so updates never overwrite them. The updater includes a --check mode that compares installed files against source down to symlinks and executable bits.
Supported run modes include full pipeline, plan-only (no edits), single work order execution, and accept (reviewing an external implementation against a plan). Unattended runs stop at the first human decision needed and report the resume stage. Auto-update is available on both hosts—built into Claude Code's plugin system, and via Codex Scheduled tasks for weekly updates. Team rollout is supported via .claude/settings.json configuration, and a drag-and-drop plugin file is provided for Claude Cowork.
