About this project
OpenFamily is an open-source, self-hosted family organizer positioned as an alternative to Cozi or FamilyWall. It brings household tools into one place: shopping lists with categories, prices, quantities, templates, and an aisle-by-aisle store mode; recurring tasks with family assignment and statistics; a shared calendar with reminders, color coding, and iCal export; weekly planning for work and school schedules; a recipe library with filters; meal planning with PDF export; and a monthly household budget with charts, per-category limits, alerts, and recurring debits.
The project emphasizes data ownership: it runs on your own server, is licensed under AGPL-3.0, and includes no ads or tracking. Accounts support parent and child roles, with read-only budget access for children. Real-time synchronization works across devices through WebSocket, and notifications are available via Web Push (VAPID) and in-app alerts. The interface is multilingual with English, French, and Simplified Chinese, and the PWA supports offline browsing of cached data.
OpenFamily offers several deployment paths: a Windows installer that bundles Node.js and PostgreSQL, a native Android APK that connects to a user-provided server, Docker Compose for server installations, and manual installation. Prebuilt Docker images are published for amd64 and arm64. Third-party integrations include Mealie and Tandoor for recipes, Home Assistant for shopping lists, Grocy for shopping and stock, and Nextcloud for CalDAV calendar import.
The stack uses React 19, TypeScript, Vite, TailwindCSS, and Radix UI on the frontend, with Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL, WebSocket, JWT, bcrypt, helmet, and rate limiting on the backend. A live demo is available without sign-up, and the project welcomes contributions through GitHub issues and pull requests.
