syrtis

Syrtis is a free, open-source macOS menu-bar application that monitors AI token usage, costs and subscription quotas. It works by reading the session logs that AI coding tools already write to disk, so all processing happens on-device with no telemetry, no user account and no cloud sync. The app has no Dock icon and supports 25+ tools, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Kiro and Antigravity. The menu-bar title can display today's token count, total cost, live tokens per minute, or remaining subscription quota, rendered as signal bars, a progress ring, or a melting popsicle. A spinning cat animation speeds up with token burn rate, a nod to RunCat by Takuto Nakamura. Clicking the icon opens a Liquid Glass panel (a popover on earlier macOS versions). App tabs filter which agents to inspect, and a view switch breaks usage down across eight lenses: Overview, Quota, Models, Monthly, Daily, Hourly, Stats and Agents. A full year of activity is shown as an interactive, orbitable 3D contribution graph. The dashboard also offers OAuth quota cards with pace projections, a live session trace, activity streaks, and keyboard shortcuts (⌘1–9 for tabs, ⌘G for the chart, ⌘, for settings). If a background refresh fails, the last known reading is retained rather than blanked. Installation is available via Homebrew cask, and in-app updates use Sparkle with an opt-in beta channel. Releases are signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, and each GitHub Release includes a DMG. The app requires an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14+; Liquid Glass features need macOS 26 and the glass panel macOS 27, with a vibrancy fallback on earlier systems. Building from source requires Xcode 27. Architecturally, Rust handles the data layer: the public tokscale-core shared engine (pinned as a Git submodule) performs session parsing, aggregation and pricing, while the app-owned tb_core_ffi crate adds quota fetching and exposes a C ABI. Swift owns the UI: SwiftUI views, the NSStatusItem shell and Sparkle updates. A project knowledge base documents the Rust-to-Swift architecture, verification gates and release chain. The project was previously named TokenBar on macOS until version 2.0; upgrading preserves settings, history and login item. A companion Windows tray version built on the same Rust core also exists. Syrtis derives from the tokscale project by Junho Yeo, and its dashboard lenses are modeled on the tokscale interactive TUI. The product line began as a fork of tokcat, and the quota-pace cards reference CodexBar. It is licensed under MIT.
