About this project

Mumble is an open-source voice-chat program designed for low latency and high audio quality, built on top of Qt and Opus. The project consists of two main modules: the client (mumble) and the server (mumble-server, formerly known as murmur). The client runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and macOS, while the server is intended to run anywhere Qt can be installed. Project documentation is available on the official website. Key capabilities described in the README: - Low-latency, high-quality voice chat using the Opus codec. - Separate client and server components for self-hosted voice communication. - Cross-platform client support across major desktop operating systems. - Server configuration through an INI file, with options such as setting the SuperUser password, running in the foreground, and verbose logging. - Support for running multiple server instances from the same directory using separate INI files and databases. - An official Docker image with usage instructions hosted in a separate repository. - A general-purpose plugin system for extending functionality beyond the main application. - Community translation support via Weblate. - An OpenGL overlay that can be enabled by preloading the Mumble library when launching a game. The README also covers contribution guidelines, including commit guidelines and an introduction to the source code for newcomers, as well as instructions for reporting issues on GitHub. Build instructions are maintained in dedicated documentation, and users are advised to select the appropriate branch for stable releases versus the unstable master branch. Platform-specific notes are provided for Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix, covering how to run both the client and the server. On Windows, the server can be started from a taskbar icon, and the SuperUser password can be set via a command-line parameter. On macOS, the server is distributed separately as a static OS X server. On Linux/Unix, the server is run from the command line with options for setting the SuperUser password, specifying an INI file, running in the foreground, and increasing log verbosity. The project acknowledges free code signing provided by SignPath.io and the SignPath Foundation, and lists DartNode as a sponsor providing a free VPS for open source.
