About this project
ModernUO is an open-source Ultima Online server emulator built for current .NET tooling. The README presents it as a performant and scalable shard server, with a focus on modern runtimes and cross-platform deployment.
Requirements and platforms
- Runs on Windows Server (2012 R2 through 2025), macOS 14+, and a broad set of Linux distributions including Debian, Ubuntu LTS, Alpine, Fedora, Red Hat, CentOS Stream, AlmaLinux, openSUSE, SUSE Enterprise, Linux Mint, and Arch.
- Requires the .NET 10 runtime on all systems; Windows additionally needs the VC++ Redistributable v14.
- Development uses the .NET 10 SDK and git. Supported IDEs listed are JetBrains Rider 2025.3+, VS Code, and Visual Studio 2026.
- Linux runtime dependencies include libicu (matched by pattern because the ABI version is in the package name), libdeflate, libargon2, and tzdata; tzdata-legacy is needed on Debian 12 and Ubuntu 24.04 for legacy time zone aliases. macOS uses Homebrew packages icu4c, libdeflate, and argon2. A build-tool check-prereqs command reports exact packages needed.
Hardware guidance
A table suggests resources by scale: 2 dedicated vCPU and 2 GB RAM with SSD for development or testing; 4 dedicated vCPU and 4 GB with NVMe for small live shards under 50 concurrent players; 4–8 vCPU and 8 GB for medium shards of 50–200; and 8+ high-clock vCPU with 16 GB+ for large shards over 200 concurrent players.
Getting started and building
Clone the repository and open ModernUO.sln to develop. Publishing can be done interactively via publish.cmd on Windows or publish.sh on Linux/macOS, which checks prerequisites, guides configuration and platform selection, builds into a Distribution directory, and shows deployment instructions for cross-compiled builds. A command-line form accepts release or debug, target OS (win, osx, linux), and architecture (x64 or arm64).
Running
After publishing, the Distribution directory is described as portable and can be copied to a production server. The server is started with ModernUO.exe or dotnet ModernUO.dll, and on first run prompts for game data file locations.
Project context
The README credits the RunUO team and community, Voxpire and the ServUO team, and contributors behind ClassicUO. It links to a FAQ, a sponsors page, and notes free code signing via SignPath.io with a SignPath Foundation certificate. It also states the program will not transfer information to other networked systems unless requested by the user or operator.
