About this project

This repository hosts the official Microsoft C/C++ extension for Visual Studio Code. It adds language support for C and C++ to VS Code, covering editing features such as IntelliSense and debugging capabilities. The extension does not bundle a C++ compiler or debugger. Users must have a compiler and debugger already installed, since VS Code relies on command-line tools for much of the development workflow. Officially supported compiler and architecture combinations include MSVC, Clang and GCC on Windows (x64, x86, arm64, arm); Clang and GCC on Linux (x64, x86, arm64, arm); and Clang and GCC on macOS (x64, x86, arm64). Support for other compilers may be limited. The README links to an extension overview, introductory videos, and per-platform tutorials for MSVC on Windows, GCC and Mingw-w64 on Windows, GCC on WSL, GCC on Linux, and Clang on macOS. Quick links cover editing features, IntelliSense configuration, enhanced colorization, debugging, debug configuration, and enabling logging for IntelliSense or debugging. For questions and feedback, the project points to FAQs, an issue tracker for questions, issues and feature requests, known issues, and a survey. Contributions are welcome via the contributing guide. The project follows the Microsoft Open Source Code of Conduct. The README also notes that the software may collect usage information sent to Microsoft, which can be disabled through the VS Code telemetry setting, and includes trademark guidance.
