About this project
Convene is an open-source meeting transcription and note-taking app for macOS 15 Sequoia or later, with a companion iOS app (iOS 17+) currently in TestFlight beta. It records both sides of a call—your microphone and the other participant's audio—and transcribes live using AssemblyAI, splitting speech by speaker. After the meeting, it generates an AI summary via Anthropic Claude or OpenAI and saves everything as a Markdown file with YAML frontmatter, summary, notes, key moments, and a timestamped transcript.
Key features include a menu-bar calendar for one-click joining and recording, automatic detection of Zoom, Teams, Webex, Meet, and BlueJeans meetings, and a global hotkey (Option-Shift-R) to start and stop recording from anywhere. A key-moments hotkey (Option-Shift-K) flags important statements during the call, which are added as their own section in the final note.
The app is designed around data ownership: API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain, and notes are saved to a user-selected folder. It integrates with Obsidian vaults so meeting notes appear automatically. On iPhone, it records in-room meetings using a single microphone and relies on AssemblyAI's diarization to separate speakers. The iOS app continues recording through locked screens and phone call interruptions.
Installation is available via Homebrew Cask or direct download. The project is MIT licensed.
