About this project
Mapbox GL JS is a JavaScript library that renders interactive, fully customizable vector maps directly in the browser using WebGL and vector tile data. It consumes map styles conforming to the Mapbox Style Specification and renders them against vector tiles following the Mapbox Vector Tile Specification.
The library is part of the cross-platform Mapbox GL ecosystem, which includes compatible native SDKs for Android, iOS, macOS, and React Native. Mapbox provides building blocks for adding location features such as maps, search, and navigation into applications.
Key features include:
- Vector tile-based rendering with WebGL for smooth, high-performance map display
- Deeply customizable map styles through the Mapbox Style Specification
- Support for a wide range of layer types including circles, lines, polygons, symbols, fill extrusion, and more
- 3D terrain visualization
- Markers, popups, and interactive controls
- Data-driven styling where visual properties respond to feature data
- Clustering for GeoJSON point data
- Hexbin visualizations
- Satellite imagery layers
The repository also contains shared code, issues, and test fixtures used across both GL JS and the native SDKs. Separate repositories handle native-specific code and issues.
Documentation, API references, tutorials, and examples are available through the Mapbox documentation site. A public gallery showcases real-world examples built with the library.
License note: Mapbox GL JS is distributed under the Mapbox Terms of Service. Developers require an active Mapbox account to use the software, and the SDK collects limited de-identified location and usage data. Modifications interfering with billing, accounting, or data collection portions are not authorized.
