About this project
EVE (Edge Virtualization Engine) is an open-source project by LF Edge that provides a standardized architecture for running and orchestrating cloud-native applications on enterprise on-premises edge devices. It leverages hardware-assisted virtualization to give users direct control over underlying resources, enabling workload consolidation and multi-tenancy. EVE supports both ARM and Intel architectures and can run on small boards like the Orange Pi, but is optimized for IoT gateways and industrial PCs.
EVE builds on open-source components such as QEMU, Linuxkit, and Alpine Linux, orchestrated by Go microservices in the `pkg/pillar` directory. The project provides pre-built Docker images for installation on various platforms, including QEMU emulation, Raspberry Pi 4/5, Onlogic FR201, HiKey, NVIDIA Jetson, and i.MX boards. It can be used standalone or with the Adam controller for management.
The README includes detailed build and installation instructions, covering dependency setup, cross-architecture builds, proxy configuration, and running in QEMU. It also explains how to customize the configuration partition and provides board-specific guides for flashing images and booting. EVE is released bi-weekly with LTS versions available, and the project maintains an active community on Slack.
