About this project

LX Family is a self-hosted, role-aware family operating system that consolidates household organization into one application. It provides shared calendars with recurring events, birthdays, ICS import, and optional read-only or two-way CalDAV connections; chore management with automatic rotation and a four-eyes approval flow for children; meal planning with cooking mode and recipe imports; shopping lists; group chat and direct messages; a pinboard; and a family mailbox between explicitly connected families. It also includes an integrated family file archive with optional WebDAV connections to NAS or DAV-compatible servers. The platform supports distinct profile types for adults, children, teens, grandparents, managed people, and pets. Child profiles offer age-appropriate routines, missions, stars, rewards, school timetables, pocket money, savings goals, moods, media limits, emergency cards, and achievements, with parental approval rather than a reduced admin interface. A landscape tablet mode is available. LX Family is designed for self-hosting with Docker Compose, Proxmox VE LXC, Windows with Docker Desktop, Unraid, or plain Node.js 22+. Data is stored in SQLite, with guarded update scripts that create backups, run migrations on a copy, validate the result, and roll back on failure. Optional integrations include Nextcloud for a per-family Family Cloud with calendar sync and encrypted backups, Home Assistant, Android and browser push notifications, Bring!, ICS, CalDAV, and Gotify. The application is installable as a PWA on iPhone and iPad. The interface supports German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and Polish, with a language switch before login and in the main header. The project is MIT licensed and includes a public read-only demo. Development is maintainer-led with automated tests, CI checks for syntax, translation parity, API, permissions, migrations, backups, data integrity, and safe-update simulation.
