About this project

kgateway is a cloud-native API gateway that implements the Kubernetes Gateway API for Envoy, providing a resilient and performance-oriented control plane. It is designed for exposing APIs with policies like authentication, authorization, and rate limiting, routing to microservices, serverless functions, or legacy apps, and supporting complex multi-tenant environments with route delegation and composable policies. The project originated as Gloo in 2018, became production-ready in 2019, and has since evolved into kgateway. Starting with version 2.3.0, AI and agentic features have been moved to the separate agentgateway repo, allowing kgateway to focus solely on being a stable API gateway. It is a CNCF sandbox project and offers community engagement through Slack, docs, blog, and social media.
