BetterShot is an open-source macOS application for capturing, editing, and sharing screenshots and screen recordings. It requires macOS 26 or later and can be installed via Homebrew or downloaded from GitHub Releases. For screenshots, it supports region, window, and fullscreen capture, OCR text extraction, and a color picker. The image editor includes arrows, shapes, text, numbered markers, highlights, blur, pixelation, cropping, rotation, flipping, and framing with backgrounds, padding, rounded corners, and shadows. Exports are available as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. For recordings, users can capture a display, window, or adjustable area with optional system audio, microphone, camera, and teleprompter. The video editor supports clip cutting, speed changes from 0.25x to 8x, zooms, transitions, captions, blur or pixelate masks, multiple screen/camera layouts, cursor restyling, and 3D camera moves with keyframed Bézier curves. Videos export as MP4 or MOV at 30 or 60 fps. Additional features include a floating preview for copy, save, pin, edit, share, or drag actions; a Media Gallery; optional self-hosted sharing to a user-owned Cloudflare R2 bucket; and Notch Mode with a top-of-screen shelf, hold-to-capture gestures, quick editing, voice notes with on-device transcription, and clipboard history. The app provides 75+ customizable shortcuts and URL scheme automation for Shortcuts, Raycast, Alfred, or terminal use. Original captures and source movies are never modified, and both editors support undo, redo, and native full screen.
