helium

Helium is a Chromium-based web browser positioned as privacy-first, with unbiased ad-blocking and a deliberately minimal, uncluttered interface. The project describes itself as "made for people" and is currently in beta, so users may encounter unexpected issues and are encouraged to report them. Downloads are offered through the project website, which automatically selects a compatible binary for the user's platform. The same releases are also published on GitHub, with separate repositories for macOS, Linux and Windows builds. The project is organized as a set of open-source repositories covering platform packaging and tooling (macOS, Linux, Windows), plus web services, an onboarding component, and a fork of uBlock Origin used for ad-blocking. Development is centered on macOS as the primary platform, and the macOS repository's documentation is recommended for community contributors; Linux packaging includes a similar development script so the same guidance can be applied. Contribution guidelines are provided in CONTRIBUTING.md. Helium is built on the Chromium project and is based on ungoogled-chromium, heavily modified for Helium. It also incorporates patches from other open-source Chromium browsers, including the Inox patchset, Debian, Bromite, Iridium Browser and Brave; these patches are organized by vendor in the repository's patches directory. Licensing: code, patches, modified imported portions and other content unique to Helium are under GPL-3.0, while content imported from other projects retains its original license (for example, unmodified code from ungoogled-chromium remains under its BSD 3-Clause license).
